I came here today for lunch with the boyfriend. He would give this place 4 or 5 stars out of 5. I thought it was really only a 3. The waitress we had was very friendly and on a $15 check I gave her a $5 tip because I thought she was really great. The interior of this place is also swank, but laid back at the same time. I thought the chairs were super comfortable. I just felt the food was "eh" and overpriced for it. I had a grilled cheese with tomato and onion and the boyfriend had a grilled chicken sandwich. I had a bite of his sandwich and thought it was pretty good. Mine on the other hand, was almost stomach turning. I thought it sounded awesome from the menu. When I was served it, and took my first bite, it was so gooey and greasy that a lot of the cheese, tomatoes, and onion slid out of it. The one part of the meal I was a HUGE fan of? The potato chips! They were super yummy without too much salt. The prices for it I thought were a little high for have generic sandwiches that were fancied up. Mine cost around $7/8 and the boyfriends was about the same. I mean, I guess for two people to eat and the total coming to about $15.00 that isn't bad at all. That's not what I mean. I just feel it was over priced for what we got and for the taste. I will be updating my review when I'm finally there in the evening. I'd like to see what the place is like toward the evening when the bar is open. The boyfriend and I already talked about coming back here for one of our "date nights" and hoping the dinner menu is better and more impressive.

Not bad ... Royal Oak meets Shelby Twp. Overpriced drinks and food.

This place doesn't necessarily belong on a busy gross suburban intersection, but I'm glad it does! The atmosphere is great, service has been great every time I've gone (fast, not rushed, incredibly pleasant and helpful), and the food is exceptional. They get extra props for focusing on local ingredients and beers

wanted to try this place for awhile it's run by a woman chef who supports local farms and products. but when i asked my cousin to go with me she was hesitant due to the Yelp reviews she had read. 1. alot of people said it cost alot 2. alot said service was bad. well i had to stop her and not to put any city down BUT Shelby Twp i don't believe is use to these upper scale places and so saying that the price range being $13-25 for the Big Plates...expensive??? i should say not, if anything they are giving great food away...you get HUGE portions that we ended up taking home. so we went on "Ladies Night", we were sat next to a old lady kind of craft table set up of junk, no biggie, kind of funny. there was also a fortune teller chick and drinks specials. so onto the service our waitress was bad she barley said anything to us when we sat down(and btw we were celebrating BOTH our birthdays and had gifts in full view), didn't seem she wanted to be there. we had to ask about the LN drink special, ask for bread, ask ask ask all night. bread was very good with a hummus spread, order Szechuan Calamari to share tasty with just enough heat. cousin got Pan Seared Strip Streak cooked really nice, i got Pork Chops and Apple Sauce that came with Spaetzle (would order again). dessert was Hot Chocolate Ice Cream Dessert and Floral Creme Brulee which we enjoyed both. would i recommend this place?? yes for the food but they need to get rid of the stick in the mud waitstaff cuz clearly there's a problem

Last night was our first visit back to Metro Cafe after the new menu and chef. We purchased the groupon for 1 small plate and 2 "big" plates. The food was all delicious! For the small plate we had calamari, and the couple with us got the crab stuffed artichokes, that was also very good, great mix of flavors on both dishes. However, the portions were definitely very small, much smaller than a normal appetizer, but same price you'd pay somewhere else basically. For our entrees I ordered the Wahoo fish which came with a choice of soup or salad, and on the plate it came with rice and green beans. Again, the side salad was VERY small, one of the smallest salad's I've ever been served with the exception of Coach Insignia in Detroit which is very high end. However, the main entree was a very generous portion!! Happily. :) And it was phenomenal, very very good!! My husband ordered a filet, which he said was great, not the best he's ever had but certainly very delicious. The other couple had the perch (and another filet) and I had a bite and it was pretty delicious as well. We all also ordered dessert- we tried the key lime pie in mango sauce- the pie itself although a very odd orangy/yellow color (I get key lime whenever I can and I've seen it many shades, but never quite this shade-which honestly was a bit of a turn-off), however was pretty tasty. Not as good as some I've had recently, but not bad. Same with the NY style cheesecake, it was good, but nothing special I'd order again- I get the feeling desserts are not their strong suit. Overall I still really enjoy this restaurant! The atmosphere is trendy, yet laid back. The service was excellent!! Drinks never got low and the server was very knowledgeable on the menu items which can be hard to find at times. The live music was also very nice, the night we went Roy Caldwell was playing- it wasn't too loud (we were right next to his set up and were still able to converse pretty comfortably!) and he played a mix of semi-modern songs and older songs but ones you'd know and enjoy. If you haven't been here yet I highly recommend checking it out! Again, unless you have the groupon, I wouldn't bother with a small plate or even dessert, but the entree's are done very well!

Some friends of ours were trying to lure us to make the trip out to 24 and Van Dyke because they had spotted a groupon for Metropolitan Cafe. Being that it was a little bit of a hike, when we first arrived at Metropolitan Cafe, I was actually impressed with the inside decor, paintings, photography on the walls... and it seemed very warm and welcoming. For a party of 6, we had called and made reservations, and were able to be seated as soon as we arrived. Prices for the food was a little high, however I think it is on par for what the Metropolitan is striving to be. A higher end restaurant located in Shelby Township... Our waitress came by with the drink menu, and after deciding that the ladies were not going to be spending $14 on a martini, I noticed that the waitress kinda seemed put off that we were not going to be spending an arm and a leg on alcohol. But, she did all she could with us and to be honest the service seemed to be very nice. The only downside seemed to be after our food was delivered to our table. One person in our party had an issue with their meal being a little cold and wanted it to be reheated, but our waitress did not return for another 10 minutes. We finally got it taken care of, but after that... again... it just seemed like the service wasn't coming by the table as often as I would hope they would have. Overall... the place is very nicely decorated, they have some TV's broadcasting Fox Sports Detroit so that you can keep up with what is going on with the local sports, and even towards the end of our meal we had started to hear a 2 piece acoustical guitar group start to play some background music for the restaurant. I would say this is a nice place to go for a very nice night out... and I could see myself re-visiting it again. .

Went here for a Baptism party for the first time and I really like the atmosphere here. Very chic! I would really love to try their menu as it sounded very interesting and tasty. The food we had for the event was a good taste of what they serve. Their garlic English muffins are the best! The fried potato chips were pretty awesome too! Beef tips in a zip sauce were very tender and tasted great! I am looking forward to visiting this place again on a more personal note.

Glad we went! Like some others that have reviewed this place, we were hesitant. But, with our Entertainment Book coupon we arrived. The menu did scare us by description, not price. Our server Jenny was more than willing to share her ideas on what she liked best. I was equally impressed she knew her wines and beers like a pro. We finally decided to split a Caesar Salad-ok at best. Homemade potato chips-though no BBQ sauce, it was very good with home made pesto sauce. For our main course we both decided on the Bacon&shallot encrusted filet. Oh my God was it delicious! To wrap things up we split a desert, Hot Chocolate it was called. In a nut shell it was chocolate ice cream, cinnamon powder donut holes and hot chocolate syrup. Just as good as the main course. Overall, I think our waitress Jenny and her knowledge/friendliness made us believers to go back.

When this place first opened, we went and it was packed. I didn't have memories of a really good experience or a really bad. This was probably 4 years ago. This past weekend, I met some friends there because it was the 1/2 way point for us, on my recommendation. I called ahead and made a reservation. We get there, and other than our party of 4, there was only one other table of 4, and some guy at the bar. Very sad. We contemplated going somewhere else, but were being lazy. We started off with the bar pretzels sticks and the tenderloin pieces. The Pretzel sticks & beer cheese were pretty good (the only thing I would eat there again, but I'll never be back, so eh), and the tenderloin pieces were tough and stringy. Our soups, the tomato bisque and a citrus asparagus risotto (sounds WAY better than it tastes) were both under seasoned, and I put a cr@p load of salt & pepper to make it enjoyable to eat. Despite the bad introduction to the tenderloin, one of the guys in our party decided to order it as an entree. Tenderloin is supposed to be tender, he was sawing thru it like it was a well done sirloin. He ended up eating 1/3 of it, and giving the rest to me to take home to my dog. I had the chicken piccatta, and the chicken had tendon pieces it in, and again was extremely under seasoned. My girlfriend was smart, and stuck w/ a Caesar salad after the appetizers and soups, and she still got wilted pieces of romaine, and said the salad could be served at Denny's. The only one who liked his meal was my guy. He got the Perch, which if you mess up pan friend perch, you don't deserve to be in business any longer. An added note, this guy is really easy to please, coming from the ARMY where his palette has become very easy to please. Overall, skip it. With only 4 diners on a Friday night, the quality of their food suffers since we all probably got 5-7 day old prepped food. Obviously the locals don't back them, since Taco Loco right next door had a line out the door, and those people didn't seek refuse for food or drink at the Metropolitan while they waited for a table there. :( They need John Taffer from Bar Rescue to come give the place a new meaning, or they need to close.

First off let me say that my wife and I came here a couple of years ago when it first opened. We had a terrific dining experience and met the chef, a woman whose name escapes me at the moment. We recently got a gift certificate . And last week we noticed a coupon in the Entertainment Book buy one lunch entree get one free. So we attempted to go for lunch a couple of days ago. We were surprised to find that they are not even open for lunch! I attempted to call but the phone number in the Entertainment Book coupon is incorrect. I ended up finding the number online then when I called no one answered. It was 330 and they don't officially open until 4 p.m. According to the website. I left a message about the coupon and if the hours have changed recently via their email address listed on the website. Nobody replied to my email. Another weird thing about the website is it does have a reservation system that apparently accepts reservations for the lunch hours that they are not open. So this evening my wife and two young daughters went in for dinner. It is not exactly a kids kind of place but we didn't feel uncomfortably out of place. It is more of a place for adults to grab a glass of wine or a drink after work. Our waitress was very friendly and tried to be helpful. We all ordered burgers with our daughters to split a turkey burger. We got 2 appetizers which were extremely small but very good. When the burgers came we were extremely unimpressed. I got a metro burger and it was not as described on the menu. It did not have bacon but instead had sauteed onions. The Gouda cheese was way overcooked to a crisp on top. We surmise that the chef had put some onions on by a mix up as my wife had ordered a burger to her specs and requested sauteed onions and mushrooms. Our daughters turkey burger was another story entirely. It was completely raw in the middle and a pile of mush. We sent it back and instead requested a regular burger with American cheese cooked medium-well. My wife and I had burgers that appeared to be properly cooked to medium well. A few minutes later that burger was brought out and it too was raw in the middle. Well maybe not raw but extremely rare and certainly not medium well. We showed the waitress. She seems very embarrassed and apologized saying that the cook is new. She did offer to bring us yet another burger but we decided to cut our losses at that point. Also the sweet potato fries were overcooked as were the fresh potato chips. There was also a table behind us that was dirty and soiled from the last patrons from when we arrived until after we left and had yet to be cleared. The waitress took off $5 for the food problems and did accept our coupon for dinner even though it was marked as a lunch offer ( which they don't offer). That said, the food is way overpriced. The cook just screwed everything up and they need someone better. We got the girls some chicken nuggets at McDonald's on the way home. As it turns out we will have to give this place one more chance in the future as we have another gift certificate to use....or we could re gift it??? Update- June 18, 2014. We did return to give them one more try. And we only confirmed that they just don't get it! They did add a children's menu. All the kids sides cost extra but the way its printed it looks like just the sweet potato fries are extra. Our dinners overall were a little better. I had shrimp fajitas which were good. But I got a side salad that was not delivered with the dressing ordered and the waitress said "I hope that this one is alright". But the tomatoes were clearly several days beyond fresh as was the lettuce. Same thing for my wife's burger lettuce and tomato. We showed the waitress and she said "i know, I'll let them know." I said "its not cool to serve that- its visibly spoiled" she said "i just work here". Kids meals were fried and okay as far as fried meals go. But both our daughters told them the chocolate milk tasted bad. I tasted it too and it was grayish in color- not very chocolaty and did not seem fresh. They did not remove anything from the bill nor did we ask. So she got a reduced tip (10% instead of 15% and we will NEVER return here. Shame too because they could have a cool place here but they just don't understand customer service or food prep yet.

OK..Where to begin...I ordered the Metro Burger ($13 plus $2 for fries), Cooked medium.. and it was basically so overcooked it would have substituted for a hockey puck. The waitress eventually agreed with me and said she would bring another burger cooked medium. The "new" burger was also overcooked and had the wrong cheese. I ended up eating it because my dinner partner had already finished his flavorless Veggie Burger ($11 plus $2 for fries). The fries were tasty, though. Our waitress was pleasant, but could have been more attentive. We GROSSLY overpaid for 2 burgers with fries and 2 beers each. $47 plus tip. The Irish Pub down the street would have been a better burger option. UNDERWHELMING. Nuff said.

Our party of 4 had dinner at Metro Cafe' on Saturday evening, July 12, 2014. We were there to celebrate a birthday with friends. We should have turned around and walked right out when we saw no one else eating in the restaurant, on a Saturday evening at 7:00 pm! We couldn't have been more disappointed with the evening. We asked if we could have the small plates adjusted to a dinner portion and were told that it wasn't possible. We asked if we could have a cup of soup and were told that bowls of soup were all that were offered. We were not offered a bread basket at any time during the meal. When we asked for some chips, we were charged $6. The wedge salads were drenched in dressing and we are certain that what your establishment called "blue cheese", certainly came out of a bottle. Myself and another in my party had the fish tacos and they were bland with a minimal amount of fish inside. The chicken tostada was awful. The tostada was not crispy and the chicken tasted old or as if it had been warmed in a microwave from frozen. The fish and chips were over cooked and bland tasting. There was absolutely no beer in the beer batter and they were not served with steak fries as was asked, but regular fries. The salmon burger did not taste fresh and the ginger sauce was thick and gloppy. Needless to say that we will not be frequenting Metro Cafe' ever again. I do not anticipate that you will be in business long unless you have chef Gordon Ramsey in your restaurant to turn it upside down. We have never been so disappointed in a restaurant and we are diners in our 50's who go out to dinner often. We felt it was imperative that you had this information about our dining experience. After having an assortment of dishes including the beef tips in zip sauce, home made potato chips with rosemary salt and bleu cheese dipping sauce, chili garlic shrimp and the chicken tostada, I can safely say that it is clear that the executive chef here is passionate about food. Presentation was beautiful and service was outstanding! The flavors were bold and original. Some dishes were complex in nature and some simple and raw. I hope that shelby twp is ready for this type of cuisine. The reviews that say the food is over priced are so unfortunate. This city of filled with chain restaurants that serve garbage for 12.99 a plate. To get a pork tenderloin with cous cous and asparagus with apricot tangine for 18.99 is not unreasonable. If you want more of whatever, go to golden corral. If you want really great tasting food visit The Metro!

This was my second visit to the Metro Cafe.... the last was this past winter after reading a review about it being one of the best new restaurants. I do remember my first experience feeling like the staff was really frazzled - our waiter seemed all over the place and they "had no record " of the reservation I had made. Despite that, the food was pretty good. If I could have their decorator come do my house some day, I'd be in heaven. The place is really nice and does a great job of masking the fact that it's in a glorified strip mall on the corner of Van Dyke. They do have a patio, which I'm sure would be awesome during the summer - and no complaining about the traffic fellow reviewers!!! If it were downtown Royal Oak, no one would complain about the traffic... While the meals sound delicious, I haven't really strayed from the tapas. The calamari is good, and the dates are really great!!! They now offer Kobe nachos, tasty, and the metro burger might be one of the best burgers in the area and at a great price!!! It's a little pricey but worth the trip!!

This was a decent place, with the food outshining the service by a ton. Our waiter was very cold and we almost felt like we were a bother to him. We went on a nice Sunday evening and the outdoor seating was good. We ordered a calamari appetizer which was really good. It came dressed with a corn and avocado salad, which was amazing. It was the highlight of the night. I ordered the mussels and pasta, which was on special. Eh, I have had better. My gf ordered the burger, which had bacon mixed in the meat. It was pretty good. Overall, not a bad meal by any means, but the service needs improving.

A friend of mine and I were talking about the Metropolitan Cafe a few days back, and I thought I'd review a past visit. I was thoroughly impressed with the restaurant. Put simply, the food was delicious, the beer selection was not overwhelming while still being great, and the service was very good. It's certainly a restaurant that I would take guests to if they were visiting the area. Though it wasn't cheap, it wasn't overpriced for the food and the service. It was an enjoyable experience. I went to the Metropolitan Cafe in early September. The weather was lovely, so my friends and I dined outdoors. I have to say, the outdoor dining is a nice touch, but it its impact is lessened by its closeness to the street and the noxious fumes that occasionally wafted from the passing automobile. Though, that's hardly the restaurant's fault! Overwhelmingly, the experience was positive. We tried a few appetizers and enjoyed a variety of meat and fish dishes. It was fantastic, and the desserts that followed were wonderful as well! In the end, like I suggested of the beer selection, the menu is neither overly complex nor overly long. They are not trying to be all things to all people, which is a refreshing change. The menu is selective, but varied enough to meet the delights of anyone who dines there. My complaints are few. I think the parking and entrance/exit scheme of the restaurant is terrible. There is no easy way into the restaurant and parking is limited. I think the proximity from street to seating makes the outdoor dinning a bit noisy, but no more than a street seat in a big city, and Shelby Twp certainly doesn't have that kind of traffic. All-in-all, it was a great restaurant. I would highly recommend it to anyone in the area!

The best restaurant in northern macomb county. Actual home cookery, and a menu that I wouldn't be able to guess before I walked in the door. Originality you won't find for miles. Most people in this area won't "get it" and will think its "overpriced", but it is quite the contrary. Well done. Find me another restaurant within 15 miles that actually utilizes FRESH fish on a consistent basis, and local produce...

Very happy that there is a restaurant option like this in the area. Not the most spectacular meal ever, but it was interesting and different. Don't remember everything we had...the salad was very good, loved the mushroom flatbread (the crust was VERY good). Nachos were boring. We had this Indian/Mexican tostada that was not great. Wine was good and the prices were reasonable. I will probably go back since I have family up here in the northern burbs, but prob wouldn't travel up here otherwise.

To be fair, I'll never know how good the food is. They sat us, but never bothered to come by and even take our drink order. Very much a "too cool for school" attitude for Shelby Township. Weird.

Tonight I visited the Metro Cafe for the 4th or 5th time. My experiences have ranged from 2 to 4 stars, but it just seems to be getting worse and worse. I had a Groupon this time. I think I paid $32 for the 1 small plate, two big plate deal. The small plate was nachos. Weird thick mayonnaise sauce and ONE slice of not-yet-ripe avocado. I could not even cut it with the side of my fork. Salad greens were wilted, cucumber obviously exposed in refrigerator- hard and white-ish. Main dishes were fish & chips and filet. Average at best. Salty veggies, over cooked fish. I guess this place is ok for a burger, but don't get your hopes up for anything too fancy. Maybe if there was more than one server on for the whole restaurant. And so annoying to see the owner hanging out behind the bar for the entire hour and a half we were there while the server struggled to wait on everyone. And clean the keg lines. All the craft beer tastes the same... Ehh

Second visit on a late Saturday afternoon. Liked the first time, but second time was not a charm. Understand that there are certain items where money can be made for the business, but my wife and I do not do alcohol. Service was neither fast, nor ponderously slow and wife's fish and chips were not memorable. Have to continue our search

clean and upscale the food was good and the staff is friendly, when i didn't like the asian slaw they immediately replaced it with a white bean soup that was ok but not great. my aunt and i did a half and half with the salmon burger and crab cake sandwich both were good, and the crem brulee was awsome and larger than usual! definetly worth a shot.

I had the Brisket and it was amazing! the atmosphhire is ripped strait from soho and gives you a very sophisticated feel. I wanted so much to like this place however the waitress made me feel as tho maybe I should have gone to the local diner insted, between that, waiting entirely to long for our meals (we were their for over two hours..) and the lack of decent seating, I would prefer just to get the food as cary out.

My husband and I frequently head to the Metro Cafe.. we absolutely love the small plates menu, and it affords us the ability to share delicious food while either waiting for or deciding upon our entrees. We typically sit at the bar and have had great service everytime up there.. I know sometimes the servers are not as quick - specifically on the patio, but that may come with time. The authentic cheese plate, metro burger, and their potato chips are all AMAZING. Definitely worth the trip out if you are far from the area.

My boyfriend and I love small plates, and to our surprise the front of the menu is all tapa style plates- I think they call them metropolitan plates. After ordering a couple metro plates we were pleased to find good michigan beer on tap. Our server was friendly and suggested we try one of the features dishes that night, and also explained a lot of the produce comes from local farms. We will back next time we are on this side of town.

The boyfriend and I already talked about coming back here for one of our "date nights" and hoping the dinner menu is better and more impressive.

wanted to try this place for awhile it's run by a woman chef who supports local farms and products. but when i asked my cousin to go with me she was hesitant due to the Yelp reviews she had read. 1. alot of people said it cost alot 2. alot said service was bad. well i had to stop her and not to put any city down BUT Shelby Twp i don't believe is use to these upper scale places and so saying that the price range being $13-25 for the Big Plates...expensive??? i should say not, if anything they are giving great food away...you get HUGE portions that we ended up taking home. so we went on "Ladies Night", we were sat next to a old lady kind of craft table set up of junk, no biggie, kind of funny. there was also a fortune teller chick and drinks specials. so onto the service our waitress was bad she barley said anything to us when we sat down(and btw we were celebrating BOTH our birthdays and had gifts in full view), didn't seem she wanted to be there. we had to ask about the LN drink special, ask for bread, ask ask ask all night. bread was very good with a hummus spread, order Szechuan Calamari to share tasty with just enough heat. cousin got Pan Seared Strip Streak cooked really nice, i got Pork Chops and Apple Sauce that came with Spaetzle (would order again). dessert was Hot Chocolate Ice Cream Dessert and Floral Creme Brulee which we enjoyed both. would i recommend this place?? yes for the food but they need to get rid of the stick in the mud waitstaff cuz clearly there's a problem

This place is a disaster! They burned my food & continued to serve it to me! Just Horrible!

Good service and food... Worth the trip.

Nice place for a drinks, great room to sit and talk but the food not so much. Bring some friend relax and have fun but if you're look for dinner that has been a challenge. Just my experience. I eaten there 5 times.

Metro burgers are fabulous, but the waitstaff is hot and cold. Even in an empty restaurant service and food takes forever. Great drinks though!!

Great app menu. Loved the atmosphere. A wonderful place to stop for drinks or dinner.

(2)Joe C.
clean and upscale the food was good and the staff is friendly, when i didn't like the asian slaw they immediately replaced it with a white bean soup that was ok but not great. my aunt and i did a half and half with the salmon burger and crab cake sandwich both were good, and the crem brulee was awsome and larger than usual! definetly worth a shot.
(3)David K.
Take it from me. Dont even waste your time and money. This place will be out of business soon. Very bad food.
(1)Jayson D.
(3)Theresa G.
(4)Lex H.
We will back next time we are on this side of town.

good food, good service, nice ambiance. recommend the lamb pasta. satisfied with my experience

Would never go again. Very inconsistent quality of food and overpriced for what you get. Sliced bread from a bag soaked under cold steak bites, sand in the muscles, etc. Gross.
